Thought...

I was thinking about my next art project in glass class. I want to make another 3d object BUT I want it to incorporate knitting somehow. something about the sts being a part of the glass... don't know if it is possible but I want to try.

So question.. what do you think would work better to get an impression out of plaster or clay.. knitting tightly? or knitting with a particular fiber? do you think cotton would be more likely to leave an imprint.. or linen? hemp? or acrylic? I am guessing that wool would be too elastic and not imprint as much. Your thoughts on this would be great.

I know this seems out there... but this is the thought process so far. Knit a mini sweater (like one of those mini sweater ornaments people hang on their trees) and then fill it with clay to make it 3d. (or maybe.. depending on how thick it was.. not) then making a mold of it and filling it with glass. I would love to see a little army of glass sweaters hanging out. I might even turn them into an ornament.. but most likley would have it hanging out with my other glass objets d'art. Me and my art glass problem.. I have such a crazy problem with art glass.

hmmm, I'm thinking that hemp might give you the results you want. You may want to go with a nice, thick rope hemp - the sort that folks make bracelets and such from. I think that it's stiffness and texture will give you the body that you're looking for.

and please post pics...I would LOVE to see your work!

I would guess that AC Moore might have it, or maybe a beading store?

Would knitting with wire give you a good base for blowing?

hmm this is an idea! It isn't blowing it is kiln fired.. which means we make models and then pour molds of frit (broken up glass) But this is a good idea. THANKS!

Having done class before...and having done casting...what you are talking about..

I'd suggest maybe...making a mini sweater out of clay and then carving "knitting" details in it....or make the little sweater out of clay and then "stamping" it with a knitted piece to give it texture.

If you wanted to do an actual knitted sweater...try the hemp, or maybe a cotton knit at a tight guage.

And you are probably better of doing a wax/plaster mold of it, rather then clay. I had a friend that was making glass teeth..and he made plaster and wax molds for them.
