llyfr has asked me the top 5 things I love about spinning...
1. It is relaxing. OK, not at first.. when you first start out spinning you are so *not* relaxed, but once you get into the groove and release your death-grip on the fiber it really is a very relaxing way to spend your afternoons.
2. You can make anything you want (at alice's restaurant.) I like spinning all sorts of yarn. Thin, thin laceweight; thick, chunky worsted. And you can ply a whole bunch together to get the thickness you want. 2 ply, no problem.. 3 ply? I haven't done it yet but am really considering it with this alpaca I am spinning very fine. 4ply, cabled yarns are starting to intrigue me and I see a 4 ply (2 2plys plied together) in my future.
3. The fiber. OOOH just sink your hand into some luxurious fiber. So nice. Gives me the same feeling I imagine Amelie got putting her hands into the cool beans in the movie.
4. The friendships. I can't explain it, but the people I really love to hang out with in my knitting world also spin. Or want to spin. And sitting around talking and spinning is so very nice.
5. How the time flies by. I can't explain it, but once you sit down and zone out with spinning it is hours later before you realize it. I do usually spin at home alone, and I put on a bunch of pre-taped shows and just GO.
And super bonus 6. The gadgets. Nothing warms my soft butch heart more than gadgets. I might look like a femme, but give me some tools and gadgets and I am so excited to spend the afternoon with them. I am right now thinking about taking apart my Robin to re-apply the driveband this weekend (cotton twine and I are seeing differences of opinion and I want that rubber driveband back NOW!!)
