some knitting and plenty to whinge about

purleweI'll get the knitting out of the way for those not interested in my moaning.
I am 6 rows from finishing the kidlet tank!! I am sooo psyched. Very excited. I'll probably have the package in the mail this week to my mom. I hope Dakota likes it. I also hope it fits! eek!
CW has been going well. I am now on row 110. A little bit at a time and I am going fine. I need to re-look at the last row of knitting. But I still have my lifeline in, so all is well. I am hoping to get alot more done this week while Sue is working carnival at her school.
Today is the last day of school folks! Sue will work carnival and then adios amigos! She is thinking about spending a week with her folks and getting some time up away from the city.
The Big Whine and Moan.
I was very good and quiet last week about Reagan's death. I felt the best thing I could do is not say anything because I have very little nice to say. But I went home Friday nite and EVERY CHANNEL was about Reagan. With the exception of Disney (puke) and Nick (blech). So I plunked in a very appropriate copy of 'And the Band Played On' DVD. I watched that time period from the eyes of the CDC and those trying to stop the AIDS epidemic while Washington sat quietly and did NOTHING and said NOTHING about whole communities dying on front of our eyes. The conservative estimate: 25,000 dead by 1992 because Reagan's politics did not care enough for people dying in his own country. Countless homeless dead because they were not a glamorous enough cause for their Hollywood sensibilities. They could have helped slow down AIDS long before it became an epidemic with appropriate funding. They could have tried to save lives. Their silence killed people. Shame on them.
Lastly a little moaning about Pride in Philly.
I am not a big Pride fan. I have worked in different Philly gay programs and know that it is simply a matter of politics and bitching about the other gay meglo-maniac leaders. If you are working for one community, you can't even TALK to another, etc, etc. Stupid and childish. I stopped working with them because they only work against each other. This Pride Event was especially sad. The parade was 1/3 the size it was 5 yrs ago. The parade grounds ended in an empty, weed infested, trash-strewn lot (with a lovely chain link fence to keep us inside and "safe") that was in the heart of a poor part of the city. I know that funds for non-profits are tight. I know the city has cut funding left and right for gays, arts, community centers. I know that attendance is down and its hard to organize. But having it there gave me many concerns. Safety wise, it was not a good choice. It was remote and scary to walk home. When you arrived, you went with a large parade, when you left, you went home in 2s and 3s, great area if you want someone to gay-bash you. The broken, uneven asphalt and gravel in the vacant lot made it hard to navigate and I have two able feet. I feel bad for those who were not so able. Frankly, this event just reinforced my feeling that I do not need to attend. And if I want to attend one, I'll drive the 2 hrs to NY or DC.
