knitting news
Apr. 23rd, 2004 02:24 pmok.. I have been sitting on my hands and trying to get out of my box (cube) from work and so I went and finally bought a copy of InKnitters spring 2004 issue. I really wanted to read about illusion/shadow knitting as I am thinking that I might want to buy the Viv Hoxbro book sometime this summer.. but wanted something small to try before I even THINK about buying the book. (rationale: spend $6 and see if you like it or spend $35 and found out you don't.) I saw that this mag had not only articles and designs, but a how to chart your own and I thought it would be better than those damn hearts patterns you can find on the 'net (or the alien scarf from SnB which Jackie is so deligently working on.) I was sorely tempted to buy Cast-On and/or Knitters (Cast-On is a TKGA mag I didn't know they received at Buns & Noodle and Knitters is the new UK mag that just started about 4 issues ago) but I held my ground. I only wanted to buy one mag and I had been wanting this one for about 5 weeks. My raise came through starting today and I felt justified in buying one mag.
Someone on KR wrote recently that she absolutely hated this mag.. and I can understand why, but since it had exactly what I wanted, everything else in it was a bonus. But I found something interesting I wanted to share.
InKnitters reviewed knitting newsletters in this mag. And I have to say I was impressed. I wanted to give a heads up on some of them as I felt that people who like knitting might be attracted to any number of them.
Stranded by Bonnie Franz ($20= 5 issues for 1 yr) each issue centers on a particular place in the world and its fair isle knitting. Check out her website at: http://www.bonniefranz.com/Stranded.html/ the website pics are amazing and I am taking my fair isle class tomorrow.. so I am drooling over them now.
Heels and Toes Gazette ($18 quarterly) is for you sock knitters out there who have succumbed to the dark side of knitting. *giggle* You can find out more about it at http://www.dawnbrocco.com/
Twists and Turns ($18= 4 issues per yr) really turned my head. It is devoted to cable knitting and I think that the Winter 2003 issue might just be something I need to get even if I never subscribe to the newsletter. BEAUTIFUL cables. http://www.bigskyknitting.com/
Knitting News ($15= 4 issues per yr plus 10% discount on orders) has no flashy color pics but it sounds like it makes up for it with plenty of info. Written by Shirley MacNulty who owns her own LYS. I hear it is a godsend for someone who doesn't have a LYS in their area. (it only has a email address for contact on this one, so if you are interested drop me a line. I don't want to publish someone's email and getting them too much spam)
Knitting NOW ($12= 3 issues per yr) is a newspaper and is aimed at a "serious knitter or fiberholic" found at http://www.knittingnow.com/
And not to forget you lace crafters out there, Lacy Knitters benefits a lacey knitters guild and also has only an email contact.. send me a note to get that info.
Overall the mag is OK. Pics are sometimes blurry (I mean come-on.. you took more than one foto right??) the same models appear over and over, and the tone of the whole mag seems like it is either over edited or overwritten by one person. It is supposed to be chummy sounding, but I can see it getting tiresome. It works well for me since I got a great tutorial on Shadow Knitting. But I don't know how many other projects I would make. perhaps 2. So it works out to about $2 a pattern.. Not bad.
Have a nice weekend!
